can you earn a living as a private tutor?

I can tell you from experience – being a private tutor is such a rewarding job! With regards to how much money you can make, it totally depends. It depends on how you advertise yourself, or, if you work for a big company – it is up to how many students they can provide for you to teach and how much they pay. There different kinds of private tutoring. Below you can find some key points that will explain more and answer the ‘earn a living’ question.

Private online tutoring

If you feel comfortable working from your cosy living room, like me, then this is great. You can teach online.  In order to earn good money you need to first advertise your services on platforms such as Impact Tutors or Gumtree. Once you are all settled and built your network of students, you can make good money, even without leaving your home. Whatever your expertise and the subject you teach, the hourly rates for private lessons are quite high. For instance, as an English tutor just starting out, I charge about £20 p/h for a one-to-one lesson. I only have about 10 students per week, and still earn enough for a living. That is the lower end as well!

Private face-to-face tutoring

This kind of tutoring is really good also, but a little more demanding. You might have to travel to your private office, which takes time. However, it is even better paid and you can often teach groups of students of up to 6-7 at the same time. Again, in order to earn enough, you would have to organise enough lessons and group activities. Sometimes there might be big time gaps between the booked lessons, but in most cases, these can be easily adjusted so they fit in everyone’s schedules.

Private tutoring for a company

If you found the right company to work for – that’s absolutely fine. There are many big companies that offer a lot of support in your work. So if you have all the right certificates, education and experience, then big companies would love you to work for them. They can also provide lesson plans for you, regular students and teaching quality support. All these would make your work much easier. However, the company you work for would take commission of your salary. It could be up to 5-10%, depending on the business policy followed. So if you are looking for more support and less stress, this is the type of tutoring you should go for and will still be able to earn more than enough money.

Private & School

There is a lot of work on the market for private teachers. There are many different way to go for it. Unlike teaching at schools and similar institutions, private tutoring gives much more flexibility in terms of working hours, shifts and places you could teach at, and, in my opinion, you can definitely earn a living out of it. What’s more, private tutoring is better paid than most jobs. The only thing is that you would have to find a way to attract students to your services. Once you’ve done that, you will be just fine.

I know all these things from experience as I have been a private English tutor for quite a while now. Anyone who has the right qualifications in any subject like Match, English, Literature, Chemistry, etc., can become a private tutor. People are always looking for teachers and additional help. It sometimes might take a while to attract students and book enough lessons, but it is very rewarding if you manage to do that.

Being a private tutor is not only well-paid but it is also a lot of fun.  We can make our lessons enjoyable and relaxed so that students love them. This is very important. For me, when I see my students become successful and achieve the best results, I feel happy and satisfied. So private tutoring is amazing and it pays off.

So this is what I think. Any comments or interesting views on this topic, please share in the box below.
