Following metacognitive activities, I would assess pupils’ understanding using mini whiteboards. Black and Wiliam (1998) define “formative assessment” as one which “assembles evidence of students’ learning.” Indeed, validation enables fine-tuning of praxis that would effectively accommodate learner’s requirements. During SE-B placement, a year 11 set 2 revision class were tasked to draw the structural formulae of particular alkanes on their whiteboards. They were supported with the formula, CnH2n+2, followed by the nomenclature of the first four alkanes. When asked to draw butane, a number of students drew four carbon atoms with one and/or two double bonds. In the wake of this error, I could promptly adapt any tasks in response to the limitations of identified learners, so as to rectify their misunderstanding and ascertain that I was upholding good progress from these learners. In doing so, the teacher would be meeting TS2 to “promote good progress and outcomes by pupils” and TS5 “adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils (Department for Education, 2015). The use of mini-whiteboards provide an instant snapshot of prior as well as up-to-date understanding – the evidence collected in this evaluation is a revelation for the teacher, who will subsequently modify the praxis to seal what were otherwise hidden learning cracks.

By far the best tutoring I've had which was very suited to my learning needs and at a pace I could work well at. I felt very comfortable asking questions and I have gained a deeper understanding in chemistry as I was taught extremely well. Not only have I fully grasped the fundamentals in chemistry, such as ionic and covalent bonding, I am now much more confident in answering exam questions and gaining more marks. I also have a deeper understanding in topics further into the syllabus such as electrolysis and half-equations which were taught to me in a clear yet concise way. Looking back, he is attentive to my learning needs and uses that to better understand my situation. He is always curious by and interested in how to help me effectively. His aim was always for me to become an independent learner. The buzzword in both high schools and universities these days is critical thinking: encouraging students to analyse subjects in a deeper, more analytical manner. His light and quirky humour greatly increased my level of engagement and interest and most important he has a calm manner to everything he does. To conclude, I think his biggest strength is that he can draw knowledge from all three branches of science to consolidate a topic/sub-topic and this enabled me to appreciate the logic behind key scientific concepts as opposed to just treating it as factual information - it makes sense and relates to everyday life.

I’m very pleased to recommend Heaja. As a fellow colleague I’ve worked alongside Heaja for the past five years. Not only has he been a key player on our team, but he’s also become a close personal friend. Heaja’s skills and leadership qualities would make him an invaluable addition to becoming a tutor. While Heaja has found success becoming a teacher he is now looking to maximize his skills as a tutor. In addition to his professional qualifications, Heaja has personal qualities that make him well-suited to becoming a tutor. He’s not afraid to take risks. He’s committed to quality, growth, and progress. Heaja is a person with vision. On a personal note, Heaja has become a close friend. He organized several social events and meet-ups helping to facilitate team cohesion and allowing us to form a great friendship. Heaja’s fun and friendly personality are just icing on the cake of his many other qualifications. Heaja has my highest recommendation for becoming a tutor. I’m excited to see the directions which he takes. Please feel free to contact me for any further information. Thanks very much for your time.
