Born in Australia, bred in Manchester, I graduated in 2013 with a first class degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford. I'm currently studying for an MFA in Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. I've tutored for 3+ years in Manchester and London, primarily in English Literature at all levels (from primary to degree standard).
I believe the key to a great tutor is the ability to establish a personal connection with the student, which requires not just an ability to get along with them, but an understanding of and responsiveness to their unique strengths and needs. Since English requires students to respond creatively and personally to texts and questions, I try to find out as much as I can about them as people as a way of helping them to engage with the subject matter and respond in an original, thought-provoking way.
I'm passionate about the value of English, not just as an academic discipline or qualification, but as a life skill. When taught well, it can help students to understand more about themselves and other people; help them communicate and express themselves better both verbally and through writing; unlock their creativity; and give them tools to enrich their lives.

Tutoring / Teaching Experience

I have been one-to-one tutoring for over three years in Manchester and London. I have taught English Literature at all levels - primary, KS3, GCSE, A-Level, IB, degree level and for adult learners. I also teach other humanities subjects - History, Philosophy, Politics, and Drama - up to A-Level. I have tutored students for SATS; common entrance exams at both 11+ and 13+; Oxbridge entrance; and helped develop essay writing technique and creative writing for all ages and abilities. I've worked both with top tutoring agencies (Blue Tutors, Keystone Tutors) and independently.

My son said that he was a really great tutor that focused on all his weak points and gave great advice for the gcse exams, He was very punctual and always came on any available date. I strongly recommend.

Rory worked with my 11 year old son in preparing him for his Key Stage 2 SATs in English (Reading and Spelling/Grammar papers). We had recently returned from overseas so had a short space of time in which to get up to date with the requirements. With Rory's help my son achieved a very high score in both papers (115 and 110 out of 120, with a score of 100 being considered the pass mark). Rory was always professional and reliable, showing considerable flexibility in understanding our requirements. He had a good rapport with my son who found him kind and patient. His knowledge of his subject was outstanding and he always planned well for each session. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to others.
